Recognition, Curiosity, and Mayhap a Bit of Loneliness.

She sat on the bench. She sat there for such a long time. Not nearly so long, though, as the one before her. The one that waited this same wait so long yet not so long ago. Still, though, she sat for as long as she could.

Two years ago today, they met. For better or for worse, two souls collided in a midst of recognition, curiosity, and mayhap a bit of loneliness. The twenty-fifth of August, a day that started out like any other and faded into a noon of normalcy. Later, though, at around a bit before four, it was asked. "Don't I know you?"

Yes. She did. Yes. He did.

Words turned to sentences, sentences to paragraphs, paragraphs to hours until an expected time to depart came and past. The visit ended. Some say it came too late. Others say it should never have started. One, perhaps two, say that it was the best thing that ever happened, coupled with the worst. That night, sleep evaded them both for a conversation lasted into later hours, ignoring the coming duties of the next day.

A few days past and then came the date. The kiss. The relationship. The love. The hate. The repulsive beauty of death and departure that life tends to throw into the faces of those hoping against it.

A year ago today, alone, he sat. Perhaps it was a broken promise from her, or a punishment he put upon himself, waiting for her to come back to him on the anniversary of their visit. He waited until the establishment closed. She did not come.

Next came the year of mountains. Together. Apart. Together. Apart. Never like before. No, never like that. Only a whisper of a "maybe" and a hope that some peace between them may finally be found. It ended... with silence. A final attempt at severing ties, which was both a success and a failure.

Now, she sits. It was two years ago that they met. She promised to come, and here she sits. Alone. Constantly darting her eyes, the to and fro dance from face to face, hoping to find some recognition, curiosity, and mayhap a bit of loneliness.... She sits as long as she can. He doesn't come. Perhaps it was a punishment upon herself, or just a hope that they could find a way to be happy.

It started off as a special day, a day of hope and longing... it ended as if it were just another day...
